Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that such operations become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
