The artist has donated the complete sum of his £25,000 award prize money to the Music Venues Trust, which operates to protect the UK's grassroots music venues.

He was given the cheque on 16 October as his third album People Watching was chosen as the outstanding release of the previous year.

Fender has decided to donate the funds to the Music Venues Trust, in appreciation of the crucial part grassroots venues played in his early career.

"I personally wouldn't be doing what I am doing today if it weren't for all the shows I played around the area, and further afield, when I was beginning," said the artist. "These locations are renowned, but they are struggling."

From early 2023 onward, more than 150 of these venues have shut down – about 16 percent of the whole industry in the UK.

Recently, top acts including the band Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the MVT in its attempts to help venues survive, by including a minor surcharge to their ticket costs, which goes to help smaller concert halls.

Fender also participated, collecting in excess of £100,000 on his recent tour to assist numerous small stages across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The money assisted venues that were dealing with potential shutdown due to difficulties stemming from floods, blazes and bereavements, as well as permit problems, conflicts and noise complaints.

Additional spaces obtained funding support in upgrading facilities and technical equipment that helped musicians and fans.

"The concept that money from concerts in large arenas supports the smaller venues, where it kicks off for musicians like me, is just logical," Sam Fender has commented.

Previously, Ezra Collective donated their prize money to the local youth club that supported their band, as well as other local music groups.

Additionally the 1994 recipients M People gave their award to a MS organization after a acquaintance was found to have the disease.

"The victory was quite enough," stated vocalist the singer. "The cash was the cherry on top but we didn't require the cherry, because we had the cake. So our victory touched another person's life."

In the past week, the MVT revealed it had rescued a couple of local spots in that region, by bringing them into local control.

The first in the city and the second in the city were purchased under the Own Our Venues program, which is backed by a national body and enthusiasts who buy "shares" in the venues.
