Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in several conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, following the opener made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in just 11 days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the side, Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There's no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
